Just an all around unpleasant experience
This movie is jaw dropping at how bad it is. How could they mess up a Superman movie this badly? It's borderline comedy. I'm half expecting Snyder to just come out and say "We were joking, the real Superman movie is here." But no, this is the final product. This is the movie many are giving 10 out of 10s. And for what? A stupid and ugly film with no value of worth.

Let's start with the characters shall we. All of them are bland. All of them. First off, Cavill. I liked him. He seems to be doing the best of what the poor script will give him. He's tall, handsome, has a good voice and could have made a great Superman. Too bad he wasn't given one. I don't mind a movie that shows the darker side of being Superman, but at the end of the day, I want to be uplifted by his presence. Compare him to Reeve, who swoops us off our feet just as easily as he does to Lois the moment they meet. He shines charisma. Cavill on the other hand just mopes throughout the entire movie, punches things and...I think that's about it.

Lois Lane played by Adams. Starts off well enough with her being tough, wily, etc. But unfortunately her role goes downhill the moment Zod and his buddies arrive. Why did Zod want her on his ship? Was it just for exposition? Screen writing 101 guys, characters actions should make sense. Then towards the end, the military have her on the plane or something. What is she doing there? She's a reporter, not a military adviser. It's like they wrote the story and then someone said "Oh, you forgot to put Lois Lane in." So the screeenwriter just put her into a bunch of scenes without it making any sense. She even has the power of teleportation as shown at the end where she appears just to be the shoulder that Superman cries on when he kills Zod. The rest of the characters, aren't worth mentioning because I forgot them already, except for Zod. Zod is angry...NEXT!

Let's talk about the dumb stuff, particually Pa Kent's death. Talk about not getting it. In the original film, his death is done in such a heart wrenching manner. The point of it being, with all Superman's powers, he still couldn't stop something natural like a heart attack. But here, there's no excuse. It was borderline parody how silly it was. I would have laughed if I wasn't so shocked about how bad the movie was.

Why is everything in this movie super realistic. Superman is an alien with God-like powers who flies around in a cape and tights. You don't try and make that realistic, because then it becomes silly. The cinematography reflects this and it's some of the worst I've ever seen. Shaky cam is terrible. I hate it with a passion. And not only do we have shaky cam where we can't tell what's happening during the boring action but also everything is super PALE. Why is everything either white or blue? EVERYTHING. This is the whitest and coldest movie I've ever seen. It's like they found the film in a block of ice. Even when they're in the desert everything is cold. Where's the COLOUR?!

And finally, the action. Oh boy, could they have made this any more boring? If you enjoy CG explosions and people punching things for 2 hours, then this movie is for you. And this is coming from someone who's favourite movie is Die Hard. News flash guys, action only works in two ways. It can be either tension filled, where we cheer on our vulnerable hero and hope he survives and saves the day. Or is can be done in a way that attempts to impress and entertain you through effects, choreography and stunts. Man of Steel is obviously going for the latter, but the problem is, that kind of action only works in small proportion. Take the original Matrix (another one of my favourite movies). Everyone remembers the amazing 'bullet-time' action scenes. But when you watch the movie, the action only makes up a small portion of the film. The limited amount of action, made the action scenes all the more exciting. It's one of the reasons why Matrix Reloaded didn't work for me, because it had too much action. Man of Steel has the same problem. How many times do we have to see someone being punched in the face? It's ridiculous how violent this movie is. Isn't Superman for family audience? Well not anymore. Step up comic book nerds, here's a movie that's so dark and moody that no one is going to call you a loser for watching it. Except the people who know what a good movie is...(whisper) don't worry though, those people generally don't appear on IMDb message boards.

I wrote too much didn't I? And I didn't even talk about the cliché and cringe-worthy 'movie trailer' dialogue or the forgettable soundtrack. Oh well, I think I've got my point across. Superman shouldn't be dark and realistic. Trying something different is a good thing, but this was just the wrong way to do it. At least this movie wasn't shot on real film, because that would have been such a waste. 1/10
Snyder and Nolan have officially both ruined Superman for me
Please bear in mind that I am a fan of both Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan. I'll spend pretty much every day until my terminal breath defending Sucker Punch and Snyder's Watchmen adaptation. Nolan's work with the Batman movies is nothing short of absolutely amazing and he has one eye for a tragic superhero story. He turned the story of Bruce Wayne into a beautiful tragic story of a man who must choose heroism or sanity. Watchmen is the story of former superheroes who realize that even though they're retired, they have a lot of saving to do- themselves for a starting point. And so when you take Superman and give it a dark spin, it's bound to succeed, right?

Absolutely wrong.

Alright, so maybe the movie isn't bad. If you're a pedestrian viewer wanting an explosion filled action movie, then you'll get that here. But for us Superman fans, it's a disgrace. I don't know who these "fans" are telling us that this is close to the graphic novels, in fact the way they adapted the comics is among some of the most appalling adapting work I've ever seen. There are problems right off the bat when Jor-El is stabbed to death by General Zod. REALLY? If anyone has even read the comic books, you'd realize that Jor-El is much stronger and more defensive than that. But it doesn't stop there

To begin with, the Superman is greatly raped with a stove pipe and executed Tarantino- style throughout. He spends the whole movie angsting and whining. It's as annoying as The Tenth Doctor's final episode of Doctor Who. Alright, that's a little dramatic, sure. But half the exchanges between Clark Kent and people around him consist of:

PERSON X: Clark, can we talk? CLARK: I don't want to. PERSON X: Look Clark, nothing is wrong with you. CLARK: I know. PERSON X: so why don't you send your powers to the world? CLARK: No, you don't understand. People CAN'T know who I am. They'll reject me.

Every time one of these rubbish soap opera dialogues rung out over the cinema speakers, I groaned. To be fair, it is SLIGHTLY true to the comics, but they take it up to 11 here and it's unnecessary. The cutting of the film is really off here too. One minute, Superman is being interrogated, the next he's in the desert. It comes off as if Snyder dropped the script on the ground one day thus messing up the pages, then decided, "ah, never mind, let's just shoot it like this". Your head will explode trying to make sense of this thing, man.

And then there's the second half, filled with nothing but action, explosions, Superman pushing General Zod through several buildings (I laughed several times). The action itself is bloated, boring and incomprehensible too. Shaky camera and quick cutting combined with 3D, when I wasn't falling asleep, I was wondering what in the hot frak was going on. And then the climax, or lack of was just laughable.

So, are there any positives? Well, the cast do a good job. I did like Henry Cavill a lot and I think given the terrible script that he had to work with, he did a decent job. Diane Lane and Kevin Costner are also great, but the highlight of the film is easily Michael Shannon as General Zod. He really knows how to make a bad guy scary- watch the film "Bug" for proof. But he shines here and he plays the villain in such a way that you both feel bad for him and hate him at the same time, which is proof of a well executed villain.

Otherwise, stay away from this turkey at all costs. Don't believe the positive reviews, the critics are right for once. I figured it was just the unhealthy and unfair hate-on they have for Snyder, but nope. They're right. I'm guessing WB hired plants to write reviews, because a lot of the reviews do seem very much vague. This film will ruin everything you love about Superman, so avoid at all cost.
Coming back from an advance screening while feeling energized with a huge number of audiences till midnight. I have come to a conclusion that it is very worth watching after a long queue as it transcends my expectation in many ways.

The movie unleashes the potent side of Superman dynamically by capitalizing locations, origin of the protagonist, and the relationship with enemies. The highlight of the movie is undeniably the battle scenes. They are marvelously captured and well-performed by a group of the endeavored cast.

Of course, great amount of efforts are contributed by fervent and conscientious Visual effects department that manage to depict the prowess of the man of steel. An impeccable camera angle is also a key to the success of the film that even makes exposition scenes look so connected and interesting.

However, no matter what kind of movie you watch, there is always at least one weakness you discover on your eye. Most of them end up being personal, subjective and imperceptible. I personally spot that the power of villains is inconsistent and imbalanced as they miss a few opportunities of gaining a full control of the Superman by not exercising their authority in a timely fashion. As if the director fails to find a better way to bail significant characters out.

Despite the aforementioned downsides, it is a must-see movie for all the fans out there who want to experience riding on the Superman's back to see different continents in at a break neck pace. As the story gets often deeply involved with science and internal conflicts around characters, paying an extra attention would help you comprehend and follow the story flow.
Man of Steel is what a Superman movie must be!
Great film-making. Superb cast. Wonderful screenplay. Decent dialogues. Heavy action. Splendid visual spectacle.

Henry Cavill does a wonderful job. So does Russel Crowe and Kevin Costner. Even the smaller, not-so-important-to-the-plot characters are given something useful to do (rather than staring at the fights and giving 'suitable' expressions). Amy Adams is believable and cute.

The Superman that we all wanted to see brought to life through a great effort by everyone.

Man of Steel is to Superman what Batman Begins was to Batman. Need I say more?
This Superman is Super Sci-Fi Adventure
This is the Superman film I have waited so long to see. It does not conform to a traditional 'comic-book movie' and is instead a serious, epic sci-fi adventure. In this sense, it surprisingly feels less like a Nolan inspired superhero movie and more like a science fiction equivalent to Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings'. The film is not without a handful of flaws, and it does run a bit longer than it probably needs to, but Snyder's film is a solid and heartfelt blockbuster and hopefully the first of many new Superman films to come.

Let's start with the leading man. Muscular and handsome, Cavill is by far the most physically believable Superman we have yet seen. But it is his masculine gentleness and understated kindness that works so well in his version of Clark Kent/Kal-El. His performance is notably stoic and brooding, but also very warm and human. He does well as the titular 'Man of Steel,' and the rest of the cast compliments him nicely. Shannon and Costner are specially effective in their parts, and Crowe gives considerable gravity to the character Jor-El. Amy Adams scores with her portrayal of Lois. One only wishes she had had more screen time and her relationship with Clark given a little more priority in the big picture. This film's unique take on the Lois and Clark relationship is, however, one of this story's strengths - Lois knows Clark's identity and helps him form his persona and keep his secret. This is indeed a woman Superman would trust and fall for.

The first 45 minutes of the film are well paced. After the grandiose opening sequence on Krypton, the film cuts between a wandering adult Clark and the child growing up in Kansas in Nolan's characteristic non- linear narration. After the first hour, the film occasionally slips into generic summer-action-movie territory once the villainous General Zod arrives, but the visuals are impressive enough and Cavill likable enough for it to work. And the action sequences are indeed stunning, showing- off Snyder's visual flair, if in the end there is perhaps an action set piece too many.

My bet is that sci-fi and action fans will like this movie and be impressed with its ambitious set pieces, and serious Superman fans will love that their hero has been given a serious, epic treatment. 8/10
Trying really hard to be Avenger...
The worst reboot..scratch that the worst movie of all time

Reading peoples reviews makes me wonder we might have seen a totally different movies.. I signed up on IMDb just to leave my review for this crap of a movie I saw. Going into the movie I was probably its biggest promoter telling everyone I know or met to go see this movie when it comes out...since I first heard about the movie. After watching it I was disappointed beyond words and angered by what they did to the essence of what superman character/story was. I see people stating its not superman its new this that.. I say f that.. granted one has free artistic vision to tell a story the way they want but to take an iconic character and change the true essence of the character to the point it ruins it.

Mr Snyder go back to watchmen and 300 crap...when you play with such iconic character you don't change it and ruin it for many who grew up admiring superman. The movie throughout suffered from a disease called "I want to be Avenger so bad". So mush so...that the movie last seen of alien invasion/ destruction of a metropolis city was beyond trying hard to be avengers.. So much for artistic vision.. The movie had so many flaws I don't even know where to begin..

If I could give less than 1 rating on IMDb I would give it - 10. This movie doesn't even deserve recognition let alone a positive rating..
An epic reboot of the most popular comic book superhero...
Movie Review: "Man of Steel" While a superhero movie, Man Of Steel is also a sci-fi drama about an alien sent to Earth and trying to live among us. Unlike the 1978 Superman, it tackles the emotions of Clark Kent a.k.a. Kal-El a.k.a Superman, as we all knew him. The visual effects was awesome and it gives us an out-of-this-world look of planet Krypton and the chaos in Metropolis was way better than that of the Avengers and Iron Man 3 combined. The standouts were Russell Crowe as Jor-El and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent. Amy Adams' Lois Lane is just not your usual damsel in distress and Michael Shanon's Zod was also good. The most surprising of all is FAORA, General Zod's disciple. Henry Cavill's Superman fits the Superman of the 21st Century but needs more sense of humor. They say it's ZACK SNYDER's best movie to date but I say it's the BEST Superman movie to date!

Man of Steel is the Dark Knight version of Superman but much less darker and full of emotions.
Man of Steel - best action film of 2013!
My girlfriend and I were very fortunate to win passes to the world premiere of Man of Steel in New York City, including hotel and airfare. The movie is incredible from beginning to end - decent plot, amazing cast, top notch cinematography, and high quality special effects. This reboot from Zack Snyder has brought the Superman franchise up to the level of quality we have only seen from the Dark Knight films. Henry Cavill with the new look suit has comfortably carried on the modern-day legend that began with the beloved and missed Christopher Reeves. I will be watching this movie a second time - with my son - and I am looking forward to it! Well done Warner Brothers!
I Lost Faith In Humanity!... This Movie broke my heart!
I know that this is not a sequel to the other films or series... But if something should exist in this one is the consistency... You can not just take a symbol (for some like me sacred) such as SUPERMAN and make this joke called MAN OF STEEL only for get a lot of money (that is called "sell your soul")... The essence of Superman is that he is the symbol of hope, because of that SUPERMAN is not a SUPER-MAN by their supernatural powers, instead he is by their conviction, principles and values, the teachings of his father Jhonathan and what learns JOR-EL (not in 5 minutes)...

-SUPERMAN does not kill!!! (No matter what happens)

-Jhonathan always will protect Clark's secret, but never say it was better to let children die because of it. never!

-Jor-El dies stabbed? Lara dies alone???

-Jhonathan dies in a hurricane, and Clark does not do anything???

-Clark becomes Superman in less than 5 minutes, only for wearing the suit?

-Lois Lane tells almost half the planet that Clark is SUPERMAN (she even goes to the Kent house, looking for Clark with the police)...

-SUPERMAN does not kill... Did i told you that???

I've always admired the work of Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Lawrence Fishburne, Diane Lane, among others... But I can not understand that they have agreed to participate in a film that should inspire people to always be better based on the fact that the truth, justice, equality and above all humanity are most powerful things of all the universe.

Today my heart feels stabbed and my faith in humanity more destroyed than ever, the few things that inspired me to always become a better person is destroyed, trampled and spit like crap ... Even worse is to see the indifference of those who criticize the movies and say that it is an excellent movie just to be full of special effects an a history without sense... Even I read someone say that Henry Cavill is much better SUPERMAN than Christopher Reeve, when the truth is that Chris Reeve was much more SUPER MAN in real life until the end of his days, than it was in their own movies...

I think at heart, that this team had in its hands the opportunity to do something magical, colossal but, they waste time in making this blockbuster only by the desire of the money ...

Dc Comics I will not even think of the anger I have against you right now!

I just hope that IMDb publish this review as it was written so that if any person connected directly with the creators of this movie can understand my frustration and maybe if they plan to make a sequel to this movie rectify and understand that they are are dealing not only with a success at the box office but the idea that behind that "S" which means HOPE hides much more... SUPERMAN is not a comic, not a fantasy character, not a marketing article... It is an idea, a way of life, that there are still good things in the world... respect that!
